Ferdinand Relav was a privateer with four ships to his name at the time he was given his charter in 136 (quite well documented). Relav was a self-made man having started out with shuttles until he had enough to trade them in for a decommissioned surveyor. From there he had slowly built this fleet by supplying items to various colonies within the Solar system and later among the fledgling colonies.  While never confirmed, it is probable that he supplied drugs to colonies and had developed means of avoiding early sensor models.  During the blockade of Earth in 136 he was recruited to head a band of blockade-runners. He and his new associates formed the company Frontier Exploration and Trade.

Since that time, the FET has flourished by maintaining an eye toward profit and avoiding taking sides in conflict.  We follow profit, skirting the edge of the law, but never quite breaking it. The pay is good, the work is dangerous, and life is good in the peripheries, with the banner of the FET at your back.
